Global Fanderson Marathons (April 2009)

Gold Coast (QLD)

Palazzo Versace – Pool View Suite

Saturday April 4th 2009 – 12pm onwards

What we watched:

The X-Files: All Things

How To Lose Friends and Alienate People

The X-Files: I Want To Believe

Various other X-Files episodes

Who attended:

Sandi Hicks

Nicole Lynch

Ella Nash

Kylie Naugle

The event was held at the glamorous Palazzo Versace on Queenslands “Gold Coast” last Saturday 4th April 2009.  Upon arrival at our hotel, and after several hours of walking around and taking in our surroundings, and enjoying a light lunch at Fishermans Wharf, we settled down to watch Gillian’s amazing work in The X-Files: All Things, followed immediately by How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

We headed out for a break, as we needed a bit of a leg stretch. We went walking around Marina Mirage looking for a suitable place to dine for the evening, and ended up at everyone’s favourite “Golden Arches” restaurant. McDonalds.

Yep, classy all the way.  Staying at one of the leading hotels of the world… dining at Maccas!

We returned to the suite to play some drinking games,  and for our final “Gillian” movie – The X-Files: I want to believe.  In between viewing we managed to have a very “short” Skype hookup with the wonderful Melbourne Phile girls, Ros, Emma and Jess.  This was unfortunately cut short due to some bad weather that affected the coast.

The marathon continued well into the early hours of Sunday Morning.

I would like to thank my fabulous Queensland girls for attending. We have managed to raise just under $80 (Australian) with our attendance fees etc.  Hoping for a little more before we send it off to IBG. :o)

Sydney (NSW)

                              UNSW - Keith Burrows Theatre

                            Saturday 4th April - 1pm Onwards

So the story begins at about 9:45am Saturday morning - when I get a call from Dianne to say that she's just around the corner on Railway ave. [near my place] -

I'd similarly received a msg on facebook from the other hard-core-phile to partake on the occasion; Louise, to say that she would be coming (*squee*).

--We have a bit of a ride ahead, on the agenda;

Drive from Strathfield --> Randwick to pick up my desk; grab some cups/drinks --> find some DVDs of X-files related movies to watch --> go to the theatre--> ( hope its all okay) -->find Louise --> get the ball rolling!

As we drive down Parra road; chatting a-mile-a-million Dianne spots the Bob Jane T-Mart's huge clock/temperature thing is sporting 10:13 and somehow; before the lights turn green she manages to take a snap ! Parramatta road on the way to Randwick.

Once we finally get to Randwick and find a parking spot - and show Dianne to the seedy apartment where my $15 desk awaits pick up - I find myself ENORMOUSLY grateful that I have a second pair of hands and eyes to help bring it to the car.

-We pop on to woolies: and after a 5 min wander find the cups : and drinks [I'm instantly sold by the 50% less sugar on the side of some juice: but more on that later] -- and whilst waiting in the line: I *Drop* a bottle of ginger beer which then rolls under the shelf- to the surprise (and laughter) of other shoppers: I'm just grateful the damn thing didn't break ! ... Dianne turns to me and says " you don't really want that, do you?"

--> Next to find the video store; which for some reason escapes my eye [ it was there all along, in Kingsford] - and I drive to Maroubra anyway - where we pick up what I've been wanting to see for a while: and Dianne recommended it as being good :
Straightheads
Trust the Man [which we didn't get to see].

I kid you not: the video Ezy did not have "How to Lose friends" [as far as I remembered?] so we ditched that idea.

*Finally* got to UNSW and the theatre [Me jabbering Dianne's ear off the whole way]. We find the theater: its open, and empty bar 1 person: the spoc soc president [sci fi club at UNSW] who he himself claimed not to be an X files fan. He's brought his DVD player because apparently this theatre doesn't have one; and will stay for the whole event just in case something happens with UNSW security.

We set up: setting up takes about 30mins [as Dianne is amazed at the extra functions on her laptop that she didn’t realised existed lol] -- and at *Exactly* 12:45 pm as planned, a text from Louise signals her arrival.

It takes a bit of conversation before I ascertain that; whilst in England Lousie is from *Newcastle*; she is currently staying in Cherrybrook with her aunt and uncle whilst she works here for a year.

We start by watching something short - as all the other arrivals were due in late:

Bad Blood [Louise’s choice; whose DVD sets didn’t make it from the UK to Australia] -- whilst I was making popcorn with the popcorn maker (a 21st birthday present put to good use)

-- when I go to pour that 50% less-sugar juice... I read the packet to realise why its 50% less sugar [and I kid you not] : ...its only 50% juice. I feel so duped ! LOL (I have a science degree and what for?!?)

The others that came:
Shoko/Glen
Jeyran followed by husband Wendy
Moe
& later on : Beckky

We then watched Straight heads: 50% of the time I’m confused as to the storyline [mostly because my attention span is at this point, only 50%] -- mid movie the alarm at the theatre went off & Spoc Soc president Joel came in handy then dealing with UNSW security. Brain capacity returned during the scene with Gillian [ who looks like IWTB Scully] with the gun; the evil dude + the new? Boy friend….

Yes indeed. Defiantly a movie I’ll have to watch again.

Next on the agenda were:
Syzygy
Small potatoes

After which we realised we were wayy too hungry to continue without food :[most of us having skipped lunch]-- and called it quits. Went over to the Laksa place across the road from UNSW (Singaporean “Tropical restaurant”). Can’t say I’d recommend it in the future though-

We learn that Dianne and Louise were much earlier fans than myself -- but that we all became interested in the show when we were about 14 [an interesting similarity amongst Philes for which I find incresing evidence] and that Louise found Sydneysiders to be much friendlier than people back home [which I found interesting and clashing with other things I’d heard] --

After dinner; Louise splits and tries to find a hostel to stay in in Sydney city over night [unsuccessfully as I later hear] -- and Dianne and I head westwards - still not having run out of conversational topics.

She once again *very graciously* helps move the pieces of my desk into my apartment -- looks curiously [and hangs back] from my pet rat Charlie - before we part ways and plan the next Marathon session thingy to be most likely held at Penrith.

Its not until later that night or the next day that I realise: We forgot to take a group photo!!!!!! Lol. I did take one of the theater - and also a mini video of us mid- Straightheads.

Next time. More footage :P

All in all; Sydney's group managed a donation of near $100 [exact figure yet to be extracted] bucks from both afforementioned and unmentioned paramores. Thanks to all who donated!

Global Fanderson Marathon - Jodie Whalan

My day started at lunchtime. I watched "All Things" first up and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. Next on the list was "I Want To Believe" God I love that movie. That was followed by several X-Files episodes: "Three Of A Kind" "Arcadia" "Wetwired" and "Triangle" I also watched my favourite Gillian Anderson film.,"Playing By Heart"   My study was decorated with Gillian pictures and XF Posters and I pigged out on Bueno chocolate bars, Coke-a-Cola and cadbury easter eggs. I also managed to fit in a couple of quick chats with the Fandersons/Philes in QLD, NSW and VIC.   Thank You to the girls from "All Things Inspired by Gillian" group for dreaming up such an awsome global fundraising event. I can't wait for the next one. Even though I participated solo I still enjoyed my day. Maybe next time I'll be able to travel to where the other Philes are and celebrate with them.   Oh and that's $30 going towards "Kids Off The Streets" Africa
